If you are planning to tour Australia a town that must not be missed is Coober Pedy, situated 845 kilometres north from Adelaide and 690 kilometres south from Alice Springs. It is known as the largest opal producer in the world. Transport is best by your own vehicle but you can catch a bus once a week and flights go a few times a week. This town has a population of about 3,500 people and about 80% of these live underground in dugout houses. There are several types of accommodation, but I recommend staying in one of the underground backpackers or hotels, it's quite an experience. There are a variety of cafes and restaurants which are not expensive. There are plenty of tours to do , or just walk around the town , you are able to go through peoples dugout houses which are amazing to see. Don't rush the visit get to know the locals they are great characters. A must not miss if you want a look at a very different lifestyle. The best time to visit is between April and October. less
