Dunkerque is a wonderful place to visit at this time of year: the winter chill is just about over and the beach is fantastic under the sun and blue sky (although i won't recommend going for a swim: the water is absolutely freezing). The auberge de jeunesse (HI youth hostel) is right around the corner from the beach and within easy reach of the centre of town. the staff there will offer you a warm and friendly reception. plus the picturesque city of Bergues (have you seen 'bienvenue chez les ch't...
Venice, Italy recommendation
Venice: what to say that hasn't already been said? a magnificent and thoroughly unique city that should have top billing on any travel itinerary. The big attractions are worthy but it is just as enjoyable to seek out the smaller, less known things. A boat ride down the Grand Canal is a must, we did it by vaporetti (like a bus but a boat! and much cheaper than a gondola!).
Wandering the maze-like tiny alleys and side-streets is a true highlight as is riding the vaporettis around the outer islan...
Bayeux, France recommendation
Bayeux is a wonderful town which is unjustly known only for its magnificent Tapestry. That's not to say the Tapestry isn't worth the visit by itself because it definitely is but rather that there's a lot more to this town.
From the towering medieval Notre Dame through the C19th porcelain industry to its key involvement in World War 2 (it was the capital of republican France from June til August 1945), Bayeux has a lot going for it with museums and other attractions covering all these major poi...
Athens, Greece recommendation
Athens is a top-notch place to visit, especially in the autumn when the rest of Europe is starting to freeze and it's lovely and mild in Greece!
The main 'ancient' attractions, ie the Acropolis and surrounds, need no introduction. A little hint: in several metro stations there are exhibits of ancient artefacts - a great way to fill in some time/use that all day metro pass!
The Student and Travellers Inn is located in the vibrant Plaka district of Athens. With friendly and informative staff a...
Lille, France recommendation
Lille is fantastic place to visit, with magnificent old sections and a vibrant nightlife. Situated perfectly on the main train lines between London, Paris and Brussels, it is easy to access. The Vieux (old) quarter has old-world charm and is a wonderful place to wander around. Duck into one of the many small restaurants, hidden off the main streets of Vieux Lille, at lunchtime to get a wonderful meal at a decent price (under €10). The place to party is definitely the Rue Solferino! Cheap accomod...
