The weather might have been a bit average, the goal posts kept falling over, and the showers weren’t really hot enough, however the mighty North London Lions enjoyed the sweet taste of victory in Rd 2.  Only official 1st and 3rd grade matches this week, but we set up a practice match for the 2nd grade team so that everyone in the club had to put up with the rain and wind equally.

Social (3rd grade) was up first. Lions won by about 50 points.

Billy Hall bought his young daughter along hoping someone would be able to keep an eye on her while he played. The Lions bench therefore consisted of about ten lads plus one baby, which was all fine until the baby started crying and everyone panicked. Luckily Chissy’s lovely and baby-friendly gf turned up to save the day.

On the field the Lions played a top game of footy, working hard and controlling the ball well despite the ridiculously bad conditions. A few experienced heads made all the difference, and best players included Billy Hall, Big Enda, Geoooff and Little Brad.

El Presidente Dicko also made his first appearance of the year in this game, and promptly hurt his back in the act of securing possession number one. Game time to date in 2009: 3 mins.

Premiership (1st grade). Lions won by 87 points.

We started the game a tad short of players after about sixty injuries during the week, however there was an aura of confidence around the Lions huddle after last weeks performance.

The Lions started strongly, despite kicking against a howling breeze. Things took a turn for the worse when our only semi-fit key position player Coach Fernee broke a toe nail and had to be helped from the field. However the goals soon started flowing courtesy of Sars, while the Hot Dog Scotty Daniels marked his return to the game by missing several shots from close range. Keysy, Stu and Capa were dominant in the middle, as was the Jolly Ginger Giant Joey.

Despite a bit of fight from the Hawks in the 3rd quarter, the Lions kicked on in the last to break the 20 goal mark on the scoreboard, and eventually win by a healthy margin. Best players were Seb, Stu, Joey, Capa and Sars (8 goals, 19 behinds).

Post match festivities:

Despite the crowd demanding that Azza redeem himself after last weeks boat race (he sipped his pint like an old lady takes her afternoon cup of tea), a fresh team of Lions faced up to the Hawks in the boat race. The identical twins Brad and Jay set a cracking pace, bought home by newcomers Seb and Stu for another big win .

Franky Italia. He’s been in everything this year so far, and has managed to learn 3 team mates' names to date. He’s also now learned it’s Aussie Rules football he signed up for, not bocce. Regardless, he really stepped up this week in 1st Grade, and despite not quite getting that goal the lads were aiming for, he did manage to knock over not one but two point posts, which is an effort in itself.

Seahorse has an unnatural obsession with Clarence. He was last seen on Sat afternoon having stolen Clarence, heading to the Clarence pub, and apparently wants to change his name to Clarence the Seahorse. All young Lions please beware, and don’t accept sweets or double dinks on the back the bike of anyone with a nickname like Seahorse.

After the festival of sexual magic that was Belushi’s last weekend, things were a little quieter on that front this week. There are rumours of a pick up however, which means we as a Club have now enjoyed more success with the ladies then we had for the last four seasons combined.  Let’s all hope it’s not a case of premature congratulations or cock-yness, as we may find a stiff task ahead of us in maintaining these rigid standards.

DON’T FORGET THE 2009 CLUB PHOTO – THIS THURSDAY AT BIG BEN / HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT. WE’LL MEET ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE RIVER (ACROSS THE BRIDGE AFTER EXITING WESTMINSTER TUBE) AT 6PM SHARP.

And finally, the 2009 Reverse Raffle has been announced. Put Sunday June 14 in your diary, as it’s the biggest day on the Lions Calendar, and you have the chance to win £1000, or at the very least to test your skills in various stupid and embarrassing dares.  More details to follow, but lock the date in now.
