Round 3 has come and gone, and Clarence has shaken off a hang over and nasty sun burn to write a match report.
All 3 grades made the long trip down to Putney. It takes about thirty mins to get to Putney, then another two hours for the bus trip down to Devon or wherever their ground is. Luckily the sun was shining, the booze was flowing, and Nth London were winning (mostly), and so it was all worth it in the end.
In the Social grade the mighty Lions started the match a tad undermanned. Regular hands including Timmy Davis, Tutty and Longy, were there, Supercoach Stevo was back on board, and along with several new faces we eventually got the game underway (thanks to Putney for lending us a few of their 20-strong squad early on). We didn't cause the scoreboard too much trouble early on, however the lads suddenly bust into action in the second quarter with four goals. Unfortunately Putney were a touch too good in the end, however the final margin of 5 goals was encouraging, given most of the guys hadn't played together before (and some had never played the game before). Best players were Simmo, Tommy, and Dan, all showing plenty of experience and leading from the front.
In the conference we started the game two men short as a few boys were having trouble finding the ground / sobering up. Luckily we ran with the breeze to start, and Fridge shook off the world's biggest corked thigh to sit in the goal square and make up numbers. Two or three goals later, and we were slightly ahead at quarter time, and with a full compliment of players things were starting to look up. The Boot was everywhere, while Damo, Enda and Fridge were all causing problems up forward. Unfortunately at key points when we had the opportunity to kick away discipline let us down, however we managed to hold on for a deserved one point win. Best players with Mr Ed, The Boot, Crackers, Hadj and Shawry.
In the Premiership the Lions were feeling confident. New players coming into the side included Capitan Chicken, plus Nicko, Hunter and Bunny (special mention for an awesome animal nickname) The boys started the first quarter in style, with Chicken taking several screamers whilst maintaining his fashionably windswept hairdo. Bunny, Irish and Rick were holding the backline together. Despite constantly looking like we might break the game open, Putney are a decent side and kept the pressure on. The second half was a bruiser. Sars copped one on the chinny-chin-chin for his trouble, but with 3 more goals is sitting pretty atop the League goal kicking after 3 rounds. Putney were one man down from that point on, and with Paul Barry, Mad Franky and Irish leading the way for our EU brothers, the final siren saw North ahead by 3 points. Best players included Sars, Chicken, Nick, Paul and Irish.
Post game shenanigans: We joined Putney back at the Putney Walkabout for their bad shirt night out. Great to see loads of Lions out and about, plus a big win in the boat race. Putney are notorious for their specialist sculling team, however North showed a clean set of heels to take the final contest for the day. From that point the combination of sun stroke and cheap drinks took its toll, so don't ask Clarence what else happened.
TRAINING THIS WEEK : IMPORTANT Tuesday training as normal (6pm start in Regents Park near the Hub). However we will also train on WEDNESDAY - NOT THURSDAY so we can use the Swans home ground. It's still in Regents Park, still starting at 6pm, but it's up in the top right hand corner nearest Camden (if you walk towards Camden from our normal training ground, following around the side of the zoo). You'll know you are in enemy territory when you find a place where the ground is harder, the bumps bigger, and things generally smell worse. It's the part of the park where that hot softballer chick in bike shorts won't go near. But that's life, and the sacrifices we make for an advantage on Saturday against Clarences old enemy the Swans.
See you there (or in the bottom of your pint)
