The story of the Trek America Grand Trek: 28 April 2004 to 10th June 2004.
Alex(Ipswich), Alex(Buckinghamshire), Craig(Glasgow), Elaine(Glasgow), Hiroshi(Japan), Jo(Boston), Kim(Korea), Konomi(Japan), Laura(Ipswich), Liz(Brisbane), Sheena(Surrey), Steven(Edinburgh) and Vicki(Buckinghamshire).
Day 22 (Santa Barbara, CA - 19/5/04)
When we left LA we drove up the Pacific coast highway. We found some Elephant Seals on the way up so stopped off for a look at them. Had a lunch break in Santa Barbara where we found a very nice smoothy shop called "Blenders in the Grass". It was a plesent drive with some great views of the Pacific.
Day 23 (Monterey Bay, CA - 20/5/04)
Continuing on the 101 to San Francisco we came to Monterey Bay. The aquarium here is excellent. Quite an array of Jelly Fish?!
Day 24 (San Francisco, CA - 21/5/04)
Arrive in San Francisco and the first thing we do is take a walk over the Goldengate bridge. Before going to the hotel we take a quick drive around the city to see what it has to offer.
At night we all catch a cablecar up to Fisherman's Wharf where we go on a Sunset Cruz! Earlier in the day, Jo was worried we wouldn't have a sunset, but it doesn't let us down! We all have a great time, although some of us get wetter than others! That's from the sea water - not due to the lack of toilet facilities! (Remember Hiro's hysterics at Kim%uFFFDs soaked trousers?!)
Day 25 (San Francisco, CA - 22/5/04)
Early rise for some as we head over to the Rock! Remember the weird cab driver on the way to the harbour? Claimed the government had drove him out his job due to the meditation techniques he used! Still, it was an interesting tour at Alcatraz and the head sets give a good commentary.
Later that night Craig, Elaine, Laura and Alex see the best firework display ever! This was the finale to a free concert featuring Train.
Day 26 (Yosemite NP, CA - 23/5/04)
We arrive at Yosemite and one of the first things we see is the stunning view of Yosemite Valley. Later we go on the hunt for the fallen Sequoia tree and the tunnel tree. Turned out to be far less exciting than we thought it would be!
After catching a great sunset we head to camp - our first night in bear country!
(Needless to say, a restless nights sleep ensued)
Day 27 (Yosemite NP, CA - 24/5/04)
After survivng the bears we were feeling brave and embarked on a trek through the Yosomite NP taking in lots of water falls. The John Muir Trail was the choice for many and what a pleasent walk it turned out to be .
Day 28 (Lake Tahoe, CA - 25/5/04)
A very bizarre day. We leave the campsite at Yosemite in the blazing sunshine and head out of the park. As we climb higher and higher, it's so cold, it's been snowing! So what else can we do but build ourselves a snowman! But not just any snowman, 'Hell boy' the snowman with mardi gras beads, hair, a carrot for his nose and devil horns and even eyebrows! We're so proud when he's finished! As we head back down, the snow disappears and we find ourselves at Lake Tahoe, one of the most beautiful places we saw on the trip! Everyone just wants to chill out and to finish the day off perfectly, Sheena and Liz (and Kim apparently!) make us burgers and herby potato wedges for dinner, yummy! This campsite is also memorable because of the threat of bears!
