Guiria, Rio Caribe, Cumama, Isla De Margarita - Venezuela

Send me a message or share this blog with your friends -
So happily we exited the ferry and said our final goodbyes to any future Van Damme movies.......

Customs and Immigration was very quick and slack....met up with a HariKrishna from England and a Polish backpacker who had hitchhiked his way around the world, so shared a taxi into town.....tried to find accommodation for the night, but could only find a room in the dodgest hotel due to religious festivals, so decided to get go to Rio Caribe for the night....

So no buses go there, you just arrange a price with the taxi, which is an old Chevrolet, and then wait for 3 other people to fill it up before you head off........ gas over here is cheap cheap cheap.... you can fill your car for less than $8US.....so the taxi's randomly were all old, big engined Chev's and everyone else had new modern cars.........

Arrived into Rio Caribe later in the afternoon, got a room in a lovely restored 18 Century Spanish courtyard villa...and also to a blackout in the town.....we have amazing timing....... so walked to the beach to catch sunset and ended up sitting in the main square for 2 hours in the dark, waiting for the power to go on.......irronically, the small towns felt so safe and comfortable even with no power and lights.......

The following day we said goodbye to one of the nicer rooms we have had on holiday, and caught a shared taxi to Carapuno, then a another shared taxi to Cumana.....where we got dropped off at the ferry port to Isla de Margarita......

Got a slow ferry to the island, not what we had wanted, so arrived in the dark at the port.....luckily 2 port officals took pity on us and organised a taxi to take us to Porlamar, the main town of the island, and 1/2 hour away on a 4 lane highway...not what we had expected.....we thought this was a lovely quite island retreat....hmmmmmm.......

Got accommodation is a hotel full of expats, all with their own random stories of life in Venezuela and semi-useful information of the island..... the following day had our first experience of trying to get money out in Venezuela.....after trying 12 different banks...we finally found one that would give us money.....amazing, ATM's with the VISA sign dont actually give money for foreign cards, or at least not our cards.......&^%*^$%^^%&%^^&*^*&^&*^......... which means having to do cash advances at every bank along the way......

The next day, much to the hotel expats surprise, we took the local bus to Playa de Aqua, one of the nicest beaches on the island..... hired a beach umbrella and chairs and sat and watched the world go by..........really beautiful.....

Decided that Isla de Margarita was not really what we were after, way to touristy, so took off back to the main land, and after another scenenic ferry ride arrived in Puerto la Cruz......and found an amazing vege restuarant right on the beach front, with a set 4 course meal..........yuuummm....

Again had an fun time trying to get money out....spent 2 hours in queue only to find out we were in the wrong one *^^&&%^&%....... so far Venezuela is grating on us.......
