Nick Fahey's travel recommendations

Bad Gastein, Austria recommendation
Bad Gastein... Sounds like a blockage in the lower intestines, doesn't it?! We visited here for a snowboarding trip over Christmas and can vouch for the fact that it's not nearly as on-the-nose as its name suggests. The town sits in a valley with huge alpine mountains towering around it. Luckily, these mountains are kitted out with a plethora of interlinking ski lifts and gondolas. So there’re about 6 different mountains that one can board on with the purchase of a lift pass (circa 35 Euros fo...
Canary Islands, Spain recommendation
Yeah so we went to a resort on the island of Gran Canaria with all the fat Germans and English. But actually it was pretty good. Sure there were plenty of fat package tourists, but, at least in the part of the island we were at, they didn't really ruin the place. We stayed in a place called Meloneras, it's just down the road from Maspolomas, but far less trashy. There're great restaurants at la playa de Meloneras and about 500 m along a gorgeous boardwalk is the restaurant and designer fashion a...
Hvar Island, Croatia recommendation
This guide-blog is about the town of Hvar on the island with the same name, in Croatia. Like many, myself and my friends arrived at the island by yacht. If you are planning to do the same, the tip is to get to the harbour early in the afternoon, as the demand for berths and anchor points seems to far outstrip supply. Hvar town is built on steep slopes that lead down into a picturesque harbour. It's well worthwhile getting away from the immeadiate waterfront and exploring the alleys that lead u...
Valletta, Malta recommendation
Our flight with air Malta made us feel as though we'd been transported back to the late 80's. I'm sure that the plane's interior had not been refurbished since then. Other blasts from the past included plenty of flight attendants (interestingly, all of them male) and a film on a short-hall flight. Oh and also we were treated to a complimentry 2hr easyDelay (the type the easyJet normally dish out), which put us there in Malta at about 1:30am. So my first tip - since we were forced to take a tax...
London, England recommendation
Intro London was first established as an organised settlement by invading Romans more than 2000 years ago. Since then, at various times in its history, it has established itself at the pinnacle of human achievement in disciplines such as performing arts, science, engineering, sport, warfare, botany, exploration, colonisation and trade to mention a few. And of course it was once the capital of the greatest empire the world has ever known. One of the side-effects of being at the centre of an e...
