In late march 2008 I travelled from the Texan border with Mexico to New York City entirely overland, on Greyhound bus. This was a twoday journey that was both intersting and frustrating.
The biggest problem was that purchasing a ticket from greyhound does not guarentee you a seat on the bus. You have purchased a ticket for the route.
I was at the end of a year's travelling in Latin America. When buying tickets in Latin America you ticket is for that bus. In the states, however, there will be ...
Ushuaia, Argentina recommendation
This guide is in fact about trekking on Isla Navarino and visiting Puerto Williams, the true furthest south town of any size in the world, despite what Ushuaia would have us believe.
Now, getting to and from Isla Navarino is not cheap: a 45min speed boat ride from Ushuaia costs $120 and the ferry from Punta Arenas costs $145, but, if you like trekking in places where there are no people and the scenery is amazing then this is the place for you.
Puerto Williams is not really up to much: a s...
El Chalten, Argentina recommendation
My girlfriend and I had a week to get from El Chalten, in Southern Argentina, to Buenos Aries. We had 2000 miles to cover and planned to hitchhike.
We sat by the road on the out skirts of El Chlaten, trying to thumb a lift. By an incredible stroke of luck the first vehicle that stopped was a truck and the driver and his family were heading to Buenos Aries. We jumped and aboard and so commenced a six day voyage up the Routa 3, along Argentina´s Eastern seaboard.
During our time with Sergio and...
Santiago del Estero, Argentina recommendation
I have recently hitch hiked from Iguazu falls in Northern Argentina all the way to Puerto Natales in in the very south of Chile. the hitching in Northern Argentina was very hard: not many people will stop for you and due to the cost of buses you will have stiff competition from the locals. At points my friend and i spent up to five hours waiting in the baking sun as lots of cars wizzed by. However, the experiences one gets hitching in a foreign country are second to none. If you want to meet loc...
Uyuni, Bolivia recommendation
I have just completed five days of hitch hiking though the Bolivian Altiplano in the far southwest of the country. Despite what the tours in Uynui may tell you it is possible to visit this remote region of the country independently. Its can be hard going but i believe much more rewarding than be ferried around in a Toyota Land Cruiser.
My first destination was Laguna Colorada and here i must admit i paid for transport, $30 for ride to the lake. I stayed two nights in the hospedaje there for 20 ...
