Athens Highlights (Edit)
Athens is a great place to visit...but choose the time of year as it gets bloody hot!Transport Tip:
The metro in Athens is very good you can get a ticket for less than a euro.
This means you can get a cheaper hotel away from the Acropolis and the Plaka as long as it is near a metro line you can quickly get there from your hotel.
We stayed 5mins walk from Omonia Station at the Pergamos Hotel which had slightly dated but clean rooms with TV and air con and ensuite. We paid €45EUR for a double room.
Local Lingo:
Greeks generally have good english but appreciate it when you have a go at some Greek language.
Here are a few words that might like to try in conversation
Ya-sus = Hello
Kali-mera = Good Morning
An-dio = Good bye
Ef-ari-stow = Thank you
Neh = Yes
Oh-Khi = No
Eating:
If you are on a budget there are lots of places away from the Acropolis (short metro ride to Omonia station for example) that sell Souvlaki (meat chunks skewered on a stick) for about 2euro or a pita with doner kebab meat and with salad for about 3euro. You can easily fill up with a couple of these tasty morsoles.
Water is about 0.50Euro for a bottle most places even in resterauts which is great when the weather is hot as you don't need to cary a Huge bottle around with you and can buy smaller cold ones!
Some things to do:
The Acropolis of course with the Parthenon etc
The Monastiriki Market is a bit touristy but worth a look, you can still find some bargins.
The Presidential Palace, see if you can time it to see the changing of the guards(once every hour)
Lycabettus hill - You can walk to the top for free or take the Funnicular for a great view of the city
