My girlfriend and I had a week to get from El Chalten, in Southern Argentina, to Buenos Aries. We had 2000 miles to cover and planned to hitchhike.

We sat by the road on the out skirts of El Chlaten, trying to thumb a lift. By an incredible stroke of luck the first vehicle that stopped was a truck and the driver and his family were heading to Buenos Aries. We jumped and aboard and so commenced a six day voyage up the Routa 3, along Argentina´s Eastern seaboard.

During our time with Sergio and his family we shared New Year, ate the best steak I have ever tasted, swam in the sea with the kids and finally spent our final night in their house.

Like previous recommendations I have written, I cannot stress enough the great experiences one has when hitch hiking: it is truly a great way to meet locals, experience the culture, improve ones spanish and save money (we saved around $100 each).
