I have recently hitch hiked from Iguazu falls in Northern Argentina all the way to Puerto Natales in in the very south of Chile. the hitching in Northern Argentina was very hard: not many people will stop for you and due to the cost of buses you will have stiff competition from the locals. At points my friend and i spent up to five hours waiting in the baking sun as lots of cars wizzed by. However, the experiences one gets hitching in a foreign country are second to none. If you want to meet locals and improve your language skills (not to mention save a ton of money) this is the way. That said solo hitching is probably not advisable, nor is doing it at night.

The final part of our Argentinian hitching was down the famous Ruta 40. it was incredible: Patagonian desert and mountains as far as the eye could see. for six hours we did not pass another vehicle.

My overall experince of hitching so far has been to be amazed by the kindness of total strangers: my friend and i have been invited to numerous peoples houses for dinner, showers and to sleep. I could not imagine a better way to see a country!!!!
