A day trip from Vienna If you have a spare day and are looking to travel outside of Vienna, a great opportunity exists for a combination train trip to Melk- a visit to Melk Abbey- a boat trip down the Danube from Melk to Krems- a visit to Krems - and a train back to Vienna from Krems. The total cost is under 40 euro with a combination ticket available at the train station. There is no need to reserve- but pick a day with good weather Just go to the Vienna Westbahnhof early one morning - buy your ticket at the ticket office and you are on your way. Melk Abbey is about 1000 years old- a beautiful Benedictine Abbey now fully restored. Many say the most beautiful in the world and with a commanding view of the Danube. Abbey is open daily 9-6. The town of Melk has numerous shops, cafes and restaurants too. The cruise boats are found by a short walk to the river. On a nice day - try to get a seat on the open top deck. The views of the small wine villages, vineyards and mountains are fantastic. Apparently King Richard of England was held for ransom here while returning from the Crusades. Your cruise boat leaves you in Krems, a 1000 year old town. Your combination ticket offers admission to the Kunsthalle Krems- a museum of changing exhibits only 3 minutes from the boat dock. Also a fun look at the old buildings and streets of Krems- Stein. Interesting. Finally a train from Krems to Vienna (Franz Josef Bahnhof station) use the web for timetable - it's about a one hour ride back to Vienna.. A very interesting day!
