I wanted to travel from Panama to Columbia overland. The Darian Gap, the only land border crossing was deemed too dangerous for my tastes, so i decided to sail from Isla Grande on the Panamanian Carbbean coast to Cartagena in Northern Columbia. I bought a birth on a 20m yacht for $275 with all meals in cluded. The trip took about 5 days with one night spent relaxing on San Blas islands, in the company of the local indigenous people, the Kuna.

My captain was an Argentinian and we were accompanied by his wife and three other tourists. The trip was relatively smooth, the sea was calm and we had very little rain.  At night the satrs were incredible, possibly the most number i have ever seen in one place. Shooting satrs whizzed by over head and the boat churned up phosphoressence in the warm tropical waters below.

We arrived safely in Cartagena after five days and checked into the very cheap Hotel Holiday, near the Old City. The hotel costs $10 a night for a double room and has a kitchen thus reducing costs further. This said however, the local street food in Columbia is some of the best i have tasted during my travels in the Americas. The potato cakes are the best!
