Bayeux is a wonderful town which is unjustly known only for its magnificent Tapestry. That's not to say the Tapestry isn't worth the visit by itself because it definitely is but rather that there's a lot more to this town.

From the towering medieval Notre Dame through the C19th porcelain industry to its key involvement in World War 2 (it was the capital of republican France from June til August 1945), Bayeux has a lot going for it with museums and other attractions covering all these major points of its varied history.

In terms of accommodation you can't go past 'The Family Home' HI hostel: the staff are friendly, welcoming and will happily go out of their way to help. Plus if you get one of the rooms overlooking the courtyard you get a fantastic view of Notre Dame for next to nothing. It's worth a weekend visit but if you've only got a few hours then pop in and sample the world's best known tapestry!
