Munich: shae_morgan's recommendation

Munich .... home of the Oktoberfest, Christmas Markets, some pretty awesome sights and the gateway to the Bavarian Alps.

If you're like me and didn't quite make it to the Oktoberfest, then making the trip to Munich for the Christmas markets is an pretty wicked alternative!

There are heaps and heaps of Christmas markets held in Munich but one of the best is actually held on the Oktoberfest site.  Plus....they have a stalls selling traditional german costumes which you can throw on while you're skulling your stein in the food & beer hall.....just like being at Oktoberfest but Christmasy!

One of the other sites is located in the Marienplatz, right in the centre of town.  Lots of stalls, yummy food and a short walk away from the Hoffbrau House!

Munich comes alive at Christmas with an outdoor ice skating rink, Xmas lights everywhere, gluwhein [mulled wine] being sipped by everyone and it just has an awesome Christmas feeling.  Great for those of us missing home!

I can highly recommend Wombats City Hostel.  Its right across the road from the main train station [which also hosts the Tourist Office].  It was central to both the Oktoberfest markets [20 minute walk] and Marienplatz markets [10 minute walk].   It is cheap and has a wicked bar [which had a live band till about 2am on the Saturday night I was there].

If you have an extra day free, book a tour to see Neuschwanstein Castle.  It is the castle Disney modelled their famous logo on.   It would have to be one of the most magical things I've ever done!  Check out the pics and you'll see why.
