Bangkok is one of the most popular backpacker cities on the planet, and after a visit there it is easy to see why. The sights, sounds & SMELLS of Bangkok are an assault on the senses, and some inexperienced travellers can find it all a bit unsettling.

Here is a few simple tips that I think might help you get the best out of your time in Bangkok:

- If you are staying in a hostel, take a look around before you hand over any cash. Some of the pictures on websites are not always reliable & I have heard of people being given rooms in different hotels than the one they booked.

- Agree a price before you get in any cab or tuk-tuk. It helps to have an idea of what trips are worth before you get there.

- Be wary of touts that try and lure you into clubs; they will just tell you what you want to hear. You are better off checking places out yourself and settling on somewhere that you feel comfortable.

- Everyone wants your money... If you think someone is being a bit over-friendly, this is why. Expect a sales pitch sooner or later.

- Some of the best looking girls are boys. you have been warned...

- Take time to visit the incredible cultural attractions in Bangkok. A lot of people overlook this in favour of the party scene.

- Don't listen to the touts outside the attractions. The palace IS open and suitable clothing is available for FREE inside.

- At most places, when drinking, wait staff will add the bill for each drink to a cup on your table. Alarm bells should ring if they stop writing things down for you - they will bring out a HUGE bill complete with unwanted extras at the end.

- Be wary of the cute children selling various bits and pieces in the street, they are just sussing out which pocket your wallet is in, and the easiest way to get it.

- Always haggle at the markets, but be sensible. I once overheard an English guy squabbling with a shop assistant over the equivalent of about 20p.

- If you need to escape from the city for a day or two, head to Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park. Swimming in a clean natural pool under a stunning waterfall while being watched by wild monkeys and nibbled on by catfish is an experience not soon forgotten!
