The rest of the country is serious hiking and skiing terrain, with Salzburg's baroque charm and small lakeside towns offering genuine breathing room.

You'll spend money here, especially in Vienna. It's not cheap, but it's efficient: public transport works, English is widely spoken, and locals aren't performative. If you're after the Alps without the Swiss price tag, or classical music without the pretension, this is it.

Most travellers either base themselves in Vienna for a week or string together a few regions—Vienna, then Salzburg, then the Lake District or Tyrol. Winter transforms the country into a skiing and Christmas market destination; summer opens up hiking properly.
