Volcanic island where fire and ice meet the North Atlantic

OverviewCitiesAttractionsToursArticles

Iceland is a working laboratory of geology. Geysers erupt on schedule, waterfalls thunder down black basalt cliffs, and vast lava fields stretch to the horizon. It's not a gentle landscape — it's raw and often harsh, which is exactly why people come.

The Ring Road circles the island and hits most of the major sights: hot springs, glaciers, fjords, black sand beaches. Summer (June–August) means nearly 24 hours of daylight and accessible roads; winter brings the aurora australis and emptiness. Both are legitimate reasons to visit.

Plan for high costs — Iceland is expensive, full stop. Food, accommodation, and car rental are all premium. Budget travellers can make it work with hostels and self-catering, but comfort doesn't come cheap here.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
June–August for long daylight, accessible roads, and midnight sun. December–February for aurora and solitude, but short days and icy conditions. May–September is warmest; October and March are shoulder months with fewer tourists.
Do I need a car?+
Yes, unless you're on a guided tour. Ring Road is the main route; it's paved but conditions vary seasonally. 4WD recommended in winter. Buses connect major towns but less frequently than a rental allows.
What's the visa situation?+
EU/EEA/UK citizens don't need a visa. US, Australian, Canadian, and NZ citizens get 90 days visa-free. Check gov.is before travel.
How much does it actually cost?+
Budget £40–60/day in hostels eating self-catered meals. Mid-range (guesthouse, restaurant meals) £100–150/day. Car rental alone runs £35–60/day. Petrol is expensive. Accept that Iceland is pricey.
What about safety and weather?+
Crime is low. Weather is the real hazard: roads close in winter, fog obscures visibility, and conditions change fast. Check road.is daily. Hypothermia is a genuine risk in remote areas; never underestimate exposure.
