Kenya isn't subtle. The Rift Valley splits the country north to south, wildlife roams in genuine numbers across the savannas, and the coastline delivers proper beach time without the infrastructure theatre. You'll see animals here—elephant, lion, rhino—in their space, not yours. It's not always comfortable and the roads aren't always smooth, but that's the point.

The major draw is wildlife viewing: the Masai Mara during migration season is legitimately extraordinary, though pricey and crowded. Less famous reserves like Tsavo and Samburu offer similar animals with fewer vehicles. If you want something beyond safari, the Rift Valley lakes are quieter, the forests around Mount Kenya have actual hiking, and the coast gives you reef snorkelling and mangrove paddling.

Nairobi is functional rather than pretty—traffic, chaos, decent restaurants. Use it as a logistics hub, not a destination. The real appeal is getting out: into the parks, onto the water, up the mountain.

Everything you need to know

When should I go?+
June–October for wildlife (Mara migration peaks July–September). December–February is dry and good but busier. April–May is green and wet; fewer tourists, more mud on game tracks. Avoid April for high rainfall.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free on arrival or can apply for an eVisa beforehand. Check your passport's validity (6 months minimum) and your country's requirements before travel.
How much does it cost per day?+
Budget traveller: $25–40 (budget lodges, local transport, street food). Mid-range: $80–150 (decent hotels, some safaris). Safari days push costs up; expect $150–300+ per vehicle/park.
Is it safe?+
Nairobi has crime; avoid walking alone at night and keep valuables hidden. Parks and rural areas are generally safe. Petty theft is common in cities and on buses; use common sense and travel insurance.
What should I pack?+
Neutral colours for safari (khaki, tan—avoid bright white). Sun protection essential. Rain jacket for wet seasons. Good walking boots for hiking. Binoculars if you're keen. Lightweight layers for altitude and coastal breezes.
