Lesotho sits landlocked within South Africa, a country defined by its highlands and the fierce independence that comes with them. It's genuinely remote—many visitors arrive unprepared for just how high and how isolated it feels. You're looking at serious elevation (much of the country sits above 1,800m), dramatic escarpments, and Basotho culture that's remained distinct for centuries.
Most travellers base themselves in the capital or venture into the mountains for trekking and pony trails. The infrastructure is basic but functional; roads are often potholed, and mobile networks patchy. That's partly the appeal—you won't find tourist infrastructure here, which means fewer crowds and more genuine encounters with locals.
Plan for a slower pace. Weather can turn quickly in the highlands. Winter (Jun–Aug) brings snow to higher elevations and makes some passes impassable. Spring and autumn are most reliable. Lesotho isn't a destination for everyone, but it rewards travellers willing to embrace discomfort and embrace the mountains.
