Mexico runs the full gamut: pre-Columbian archaeology, Caribbean beaches, colonial mountain towns, and one of the world's great capital cities. You'll find Mayan temples in the Yucatán Peninsula, underground freshwater lakes (cenotes) scattered across limestone karst, and Pacific breaks that pull surfers year-round.

The country's infrastructure is solid for travellers. Roads between major regions are decent, buses are cheap and extensive, and you can eat brilliantly for pennies or splurge on top-tier restaurants. Tourism is concentrated in pockets—Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Mexico City—but venture inland and you'll find colonial towns, biosphere reserves, and archaeological sites with far fewer crowds.

Mexico rewards staying longer than a fortnight. Regional differences are stark: the Yucatán's laid-back, watery landscape versus the high-altitude valleys of central Mexico, versus the dusty northern deserts. Pick two or three regions and move slowly.

Highlights

  1. Yucatán Peninsula archaeologyMayan ruins from Chichén-Itzá to Calakmul, many unexcavated. Scattered across jungle and limestone plains.
  2. CenotesFreshwater sinkholes good for swimming and snorkelling. The Yucatán has thousands; many accessible by road.
  3. Mexico CityMassive, chaotic, absorbing capital. Pre-Hispanic museums, murals, markets, and food scene rival anywhere in the world.
  4. Caribbean coast and islandsCoral reefs, clear water, and laid-back beach towns from Cancún south to Tulum. Isla Mujeres for quieter swimming.
  5. Colonial highlandsSpanish-era towns in mountain valleys. Querétaro, Guanajuato, Oaxaca: walkable plazas, markets, churches, local craft.
  6. Pacific coastWarm water year-round, volcanic beaches, and surfer towns. Less crowded than the Caribbean side.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
November–April: dry season, warm, few crowds outside major tourist zones. June–September is rainy but cheaper and greener; hurricane risk is present but localised. Avoid Christmas–New Year crush unless you like crowds.
Do I need a visa?+
Most Western passport holders get 180 days visa-free as tourists. Check your nationality with immigration beforehand. US citizens occasionally face entry denials for unrelated reasons; have your documents clean.
What's a realistic daily budget?+
Backpacker (guesthouses, street food, buses): 400–600 pesos ($25–40 USD). Mid-range (decent hotels, casual restaurants): 1,000–1,500 pesos ($65–95). Comfortable (tourist-grade hotels, restaurants): 2,000+ pesos ($130+).
Is it safe for tourists?+
Tourism zones are generally safe; petty theft happens everywhere. Avoid displaying cash, avoid driving at night between cities, and use registered taxis or apps. Drug cartel violence is real but rarely touches tourists' routes.
What should I pack?+
Sun protection (very strong UV). Lightweight, breathable clothes for heat and humidity. Sandals that dry fast. Mosquito repellent (dengue and zika circulate). Toilet paper and wet wipes; rural toilets can be basic.
