Morocco hits differently than the Instagram version. Yes, the medinas are labyrinthine and loud and genuinely disorienting. Yes, the food is excellent. But what gets you is the negotiation—with shopkeepers, taxi drivers, your own expectations. You'll spend half your time lost and half your time eating tagine.

The country splits neatly: coastal cities (Casablanca, Essaouira) for maritime charm; Marrakech and Fes for the classic medina theatre; the Atlas Mountains for trekking and Amazigh (Berber) culture; the Sahara for dunes and quiet. Most travellers string together 2–3 regions in 2–3 weeks.

Be realistic about hassle. Unofficial guides, overpriced tourist meals, and relentless shop pitches are part of the contract. It's not dangerous, but it's exhausting if you're not in the right headspace. Firm politeness works better than friendliness.

Highlights

  1. Marrakech MedinaMaze-like old city, Jemaa el-Fnaa square with snake charmers, impossible to navigate without getting properly lost.
  2. High Atlas MountainsTrekking, Berber homestays, Toubkal summit. Base yourself in Imlil or Aroumd for multi-day walks through valleys.
  3. Sahara DesertMerzouga dunes, camel treks, night camping under stars. Actual desert—heat, silence, and surprisingly good couscous.
  4. Coastal Atlantic TownsEssaouira for laid-back beach vibes and fresh seafood. Less polished than Marrakech, more functional and chilled.
  5. Casablanca Hassan II MosqueStunning modernist mosque on the waterfront. Non-Muslims can't enter but the exterior and grounds justify a stop.
  6. Cycling Routes (Atlas & Merzouga)Mountain and desert cycling tours. Easier on legs than trekking, different pace for exploring rural villages and clay landscapes.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
April–May and September–October (shoulder seasons). Summer (June–August) is brutally hot; winter (December–February) is cool but wet in the north. Avoid Ramadan if you want normal restaurant hours and local patience.
Do I need a visa?+
Nationals of EU, US, Canada, Australia, and most Commonwealth countries get 90 days visa-free. Check your passport details; visa rules shift. Arrival stamp in passport is standard.
How much should I budget?+
$20–30 backpacker (street food, budget riads). $50–80 mid-range (decent hotel, restaurant dinners). $150+ comfortable (upmarket riads, guided tours, food experiences).
Is it safe?+
Generally safe for tourists. Petty theft and aggressive sales pitches are the main hazards, not violent crime. Avoid flashing valuables; trust your gut on guides. Women travellers report regular street harassment—standard for the region.
What should I pack?+
Lightweight, loose clothing (respectful and practical). Comfortable walking shoes for medina cobbles. Sun protection, sunscreen, and a light scarf. Bring cash (ATMs available in cities but don't rely on cards). Modest swimwear if heading to beaches.
