Dutch colonial architecture meets Amazon rainforest and Caribbean warmth

OverviewCitiesAttractionsToursArticles

Suriname is South America's smallest independent nation and its least-visited gem. The capital, Paramaribo, sits on the coast with pastel-painted wooden colonial buildings that feel frozen in time. Inland, the country is covered by rainforest—dense, biodiverse, and accessible mainly by river and foot.

The country's population is genuinely multicultural: descendants of Dutch colonists, freed slaves, indentured labourers from India, Indonesia, and China, plus indigenous and Maroon communities. That blend shows in the food, festivals, and everyday life. Dutch is the official language, but you'll hear English, Hindi, Javanese, and creole.

It's rough around the edges—infrastructure is basic, tourist facilities are sparse, and the interior requires preparation and patience. But that's partly the appeal: you won't fight crowds, prices are low, and the rainforest and wildlife are genuinely wild.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
Apr–Aug and Nov–Feb are drier. May–Aug and Dec–Jan are peak. Heavy rain makes interior roads impassable; plan accordingly if heading inland. Coastal areas are accessible year-round.
Do I need a visa?+
Many nationalities (UK, US, Australia, EU, Canada) get 90 days visa-free. Check before you book. Visas issued on arrival are unpredictable; apply at an embassy if required.
What's a realistic daily budget?+
Budget travellers: $25–40 (guesthouses, street food, local transport). Mid-range: $60–100 (decent hotels, restaurants, activities). Comfortable: $150+ (better comfort, flights, guided tours).
Is it safe?+
Paramaribo has petty crime and some neighbourhoods to avoid after dark; use common sense. The interior is remote but safe if you're with guides. Avoid the southern border region and isolated areas.
What do I need to pack for the interior?+
Insect repellent (essential), long sleeves, sturdy boots, waterproof bag, torch, first aid, antimalarial tablets, cash in small notes. Guides usually provide dugout canoes and basic shelter.
