Angkor Wat is one of those places that genuinely earns its reputation. The main temple complex rises from the jungle plains of Siem Reap with an almost unreal grandeur — five towers climbing above a vast moat, their reflections shimmering in the water at sunrise if you arrive early enough.

Walking the 800-metre causeway toward the entrance for the first time is quietly overwhelming, and the scale only grows once you're inside, exploring galleries lined with intricate bas-reliefs depicting Hindu epics and ancient Khmer royal processions.

The crowds are real and worth planning around. Sunrise draws the largest surge, particularly at the reflecting pools to the northwest of the complex. If you want the towers to yourself, arriving around 7am after the sunrise rush thins out gives you a more relaxed experience.

The full complex rewards at least three hours, and comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable — the stone surfaces are uneven and some interior staircases are genuinely steep. Dress codes are strictly enforced: shoulders and knees must be covered, so bring a light scarf or wear a loose long-sleeved shirt, especially practical in the heat.

A tuk-tuk from central Siem Reap takes around 20 minutes and is the most convenient option. A multi-day Angkor Archaeological Park pass (one, three, or seven-day options available) is required and purchased at the official ticket centre on the road to Angkor Thom. Avoid buying anything else from touts at the gates.

The wider Angkor complex — including Ta Prohm and Bayon — is worth exploring over multiple days if your pass allows.

Visit between November and February for cooler, drier weather, and bring plenty of water regardless of the season.
