Anilao sits about two hours south of Manila on the Batangas coast, and if you've ever lost an hour of a dive staring at a two-centimetre nudibranch, this is your place. The muck and reef diving here is genuinely world-class for small stuff — the nudibranch count alone draws underwater photographers from across the planet, and for good reason.

On a single dive at a site like Kirby's Rock or Bahura, you might clock eight or ten species without really trying.

Depths typically run from five metres down to around 30, and most of the serious macro hunting happens shallower than 18 metres, which is good news for air consumption. Visibility varies — expect 10 to 20 metres on a decent day, though surge and seasonal runoff can knock that back considerably.

Currents are generally mild and manageable, making it approachable for relatively new divers, though some sites do push when the tides run hard. Keep your buoyancy tight here; the substrate is silty and a careless fin kick destroys exactly what you came to see.

The reef condition is mixed, honestly. Some sections show bleaching and historical anchor damage, but the macro life persists regardless, tucked into rubble and sandy slopes. Ghost pipefish, flamboyant cuttlefish, hairy frogfish, and rhinopias turn up with pleasing regularity. Operators are plentiful along the Anilao coastline, running day boat trips from small resorts that cater specifically to divers — most have their own house reefs.

Liveaboards are not the standard setup here; shore-based resort diving is the norm and works well given how concentrated the sites are.

Best visited November through June during dry season; Open Water certification is sufficient, though strong buoyancy control is genuinely essential for protecting the marine life.
