Apo Island sits about a 45-minute banca boat ride off the coast of Dumaguete, and it remains one of those rare places where community-managed conservation has genuinely worked.

The local fishing community established the marine reserve back in 1982, and the difference is visible the moment you drop in — the coral cover is dense, the fish biomass is striking, and you feel the weight of that collective decision every time a green turtle glides past at arm's length.

Most sites run between 5 and 30 metres, with visibility typically hitting 15 to 25 metres on a settled day. The currents can be honest around the southern and eastern walls — Chapel Point and Mamsa Point in particular — so intermediate divers will feel more comfortable than raw beginners.

That said, snorkellers over the shallow northern reef genuinely encounter turtles within minutes of entering the water, which makes Apo accessible and rewarding without a tank. The jackfish tornado at Cogon is a specific highlight worth timing your slack-water dive around; it materialises out of the blue column without warning and disappears just as quickly.

Operators run exclusively as day boats out of Dauin or Dumaguete. There are no liveaboards based here, and overnight stays on the island are limited and require booking well ahead. Several established dive centres in Dumaguete — Scuba Ventures, Harold's Dive Centre, and a handful of resort operators in Dauin — run reliable scheduled trips.

Gear rental is available but quality varies, so travelling with your own regulator and computer is worth the bag weight.

The reef shows some historical bleaching in shallower zones, but recovery has been notable, and compared to much of the Philippines, Apo still looks genuinely healthy.

Best visited March to June; Open Water certification minimum, though Advanced is recommended for the deeper wall dives.
