South Ari Atoll sits about 90 kilometres southwest of Malé, and getting there sets the tone for the whole trip — you arrive by seaplane, skimming low over a patchwork of turquoise lagoons and dark reef outlines that make you reach for your mask before you've even landed.

The diving here is genuinely varied. Reef walls drop from around 5 metres to beyond 30, and visibility typically holds between 20 and 30 metres, sometimes more on an incoming tide. Currents range from slack to moderately strong depending on the channel and the season, so most sites suit Open Water divers, though a few drift dives reward those with more experience.

The whale shark aggregation around South Ari — particularly near Dhigurah and Maamigili — is among the most reliable anywhere in the world, operating throughout the year rather than during a narrow seasonal window. You'll also find manta cleaning stations at sites like Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila), where grey reef sharks, trevally, and dense schools of fusiliers add to the spectacle. Hammerheads make occasional appearances, though they're less guaranteed.

Reef condition is honestly mixed. Some shallower areas show bleaching damage from recent thermal events, but the deeper walls and thilas remain in solid shape, and fish biomass is genuinely impressive. Responsible operators exist here — ask specifically about anchoring practices and whether their whale shark interactions follow the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme guidelines.

Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses on local islands like Dhigurah, which run affordable day boats, to high-end resort dive centres and liveaboards that cover the whole atoll in four to seven nights.

Best months are November through April for calmer seas and peak visibility; the whale sharks, however, make almost any month worth considering.
