South Ari Atoll sits in the central Maldives and delivers the kind of diving that makes you forget to check your air gauge. The big draw is wildlife, and it delivers consistently. Whale sharks congregate around the southern atolls year-round, with Maamigili Beyru being the most reliable spot — local fishing boats act as informal spotters, and you'll often find yourself slipping off a dhoni within minutes of a sighting.

Tiger sharks patrol the deeper channels, particularly around Dhigurah and Rangali, and on a good day you can drop to 18–25 metres along the reef wall and find them cruising unhurriedly below you. Hammerhead aggregations appear seasonally, typically in the early morning at sites like Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila), where strong currents funnel nutrients and baitfish into a compressed space.

Visibility runs 15–30 metres depending on season and tidal movement, and currents here are no joke — several sites demand at least an Advanced Open Water certification and genuine comfort in drift diving. The coral gardens in shallower areas, 5–15 metres, are genuinely in good shape relative to much of the Indian Ocean.

Some bleaching occurred during the 2016 and 2023 thermal events, but recovery has been reasonable, and the structural complexity remains intact.

Liveaboards are the most efficient way to cover the atoll properly, with vessels departing from Malé or Maafushi running 7–10 night itineraries. Day boats operate from the resorts on Maamigili and Dhigurah, which suits those wanting a land-based base. Multiple PADI operators are available at varying price points.

Advanced Open Water or equivalent is strongly recommended; beginners will enjoy snorkelling the lagoon shallows but will miss the signature shark encounters entirely.
