Standing on the elevated terrace above the Aare river bend, you get one of the most quietly rewarding views in all of Switzerland. The old town of Bern spreads out before you in a wide, sandstone-coloured panorama — the cathedral spire of the Berner Münster rising above terracotta rooftops, the green river curling almost completely around the medieval peninsula below. It feels genuinely old, because it is.

Much of what you see has stood since the 12th and 13th centuries, and UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage Site back in 1983.

The viewpoint sits near Grosser Muristalden, a short climb from the Kirchenfeld district on the south side of the river. You can reach it comfortably on foot from the old town itself by crossing the Nydeggbrücke bridge and following the path up through the rose garden area, or approach from the Rosengarten above — both routes take roughly 15 minutes at a relaxed pace.

There are no entrance fees and no ticket queues, which makes it refreshingly uncomplicated.

Crowds are modest by European city standards, though summer weekends bring more visitors to this side of the river. Early mornings offer the softest light and near-complete quiet, which suits photographers well. The bear park at the base of the hill adds a quirky layer to the area — Bern's heraldic animal kept in a riverside habitat just minutes away.

Winters here are genuinely cold, so layer properly if you're visiting between November and February, and expect the cobbled paths to be slippery after rain or frost.

Aim for a clear morning in late spring or early autumn when the light is warm, the foliage is at its best, and the views stretch uninterrupted to the Alps on a good day.
