Big Ben
London, United Kingdomattractions
Few landmarks in the world carry quite the same instant recognition as the Elizabeth Tower — though most people still call it Big Ben, which is technically the name of the great bell housed within. Standing at the north end of the Palace of Westminster along the Thames, the tower is an undeniable presence: ornate, enormous, and somehow more impressive in person than in every photograph you've seen of it. The gothic detailing up close is genuinely worth pausing to appreciate, particularly in the golden light of late afternoon when the stone takes on a warm, almost amber glow.
The surrounding area along the Embankment and Parliament Square buzzes constantly with tourists, tour buses, and the general organised chaos of central London. Westminster Bridge offers the classic postcard angle and is a reasonable spot to linger, though you'll be sharing it with half the world. For a slightly less crowded vantage point, cross to the South Bank and look back from near Lambeth Bridge — the perspective is broader and the foot traffic noticeably thinner.
You cannot enter the tower itself unless you are a UK resident and arrange a tour through your local MP, so most visitors are here purely for the exterior. That's honestly fine — it rewards unhurried looking. Westminster Underground station (Circle, District, and Jubilee lines) drops you almost at the door, making it one of the easiest major landmarks in London to reach. The area is also walkable from Waterloo or Victoria.
Restoration work has continued in recent years, so check current scaffolding status before you go if the full visual is important to you. Visit on a dry weekday morning in spring or autumn for the best combination of light, manageable crowds, and comfortable temperatures.
