Giza Zoo sits on 80 hectares in the heart of Cairo's Giza district, and arriving through its ornate iron gates feels like stepping into another era entirely.

Founded in 1891, it holds the distinction of being Africa's largest zoo, and the grounds still carry the faded grandeur of that colonial-era ambition — wide tree-lined promenades, a cast-iron suspension bridge, lotus-covered ponds, and mature fig trees providing generous shade in what can otherwise be a punishing urban heat.

The sheer scale impresses, but honesty requires noting that many enclosures here reflect that original Victorian design philosophy: concrete barriers, modest space, and minimal environmental enrichment. Animal welfare standards fall well short of what you would encounter at a contemporary European or Australasian facility, and visitors who are sensitive to that should go in with eyes open.

That said, the collection is genuinely broad. The hippo pool draws consistent crowds, the lion enclosures hold some impressive animals, and the zoo maintains populations of species that are rarely seen elsewhere in North Africa. The historical gardens are worth exploring for their own sake, entirely apart from the animals.

Cairo's heat means an early start is non-negotiable between April and October — aim for gates-open around eight in the morning and plan to leave by midday. Friday and public holidays bring enormous local crowds, particularly families with young children, so a mid-week visit is considerably calmer. The zoo is reachable by metro to Giza Station and a short walk or microbus ride from there.

Wear closed shoes, bring your own water, and allow three to four hours for a thorough circuit.

Families with older children and those interested in zoo history will get the most from a visit here.
