Chiang Mai Night Bazaar
Chiang Mai, Thailandfood
The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is the city's most touristy market — and worth visiting anyway. Stretching for several blocks along Chang Klan Road, it's a sprawl of stalls selling hill tribe textiles, leather goods, silver jewellery, lanterns, knockoff sportswear, and a thousand variations on elephant-print pants.
Bargaining is expected and friendly — start at around half the asking price and work toward something you both feel good about. Most vendors are used to it and will laugh through the whole exchange. The food courts on either end are genuinely good, with reasonably priced pad thai, khao soi, and grilled meats served alongside live music that ranges from talented to enthusiastic.
If you prefer something more local, the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road is the better experience — handmade crafts, more atmosphere, and fewer mass-produced souvenirs. But the Night Bazaar is open every night and an easy way to fill a couple of hours after dinner. Bring small notes (10/20/50 baht) for easier transactions and watch your bag in the crowds.
