Dropping into one of the world's deepest canyons on a loaded bike is as humbling as it sounds. The classic approach from Chivay follows the canyon rim road southeast toward Cruz del Cóndor, where Andean condors ride thermals at eye level most mornings between eight and ten. The riding here is almost entirely on gravel and compacted dirt, loose in places and corrugated where vehicle traffic has been heaviest.

Expect punctures. Expect dust in your teeth and your chain.

Most riders spread the canyon section across three to five days, depending on how deep into the canyon they push. The descent from the altiplano toward Cabanaconde loses over a thousand metres in elevation, and your legs will feel those metres again on the long, grinding climb back out.

Altitude is the quiet enemy throughout — you are rarely below 3,200 metres and frequently above 4,000, so a couple of acclimatisation days in Arequipa beforehand is not optional, it is sensible. Water sources between villages are unreliable; carry at least three litres.

Accommodation runs from basic hospedajes in Chivay and Cabanaconde to oasis-side guesthouses at the canyon floor near Sangalle, where cold beers and warm showers feel genuinely miraculous. Bike hire in Arequipa is improving — a handful of operators now offer decent hardtail mountain bikes with racks, but bring your own helmet and gloves if you can.

The route shares unpaved roads with local minibuses and the occasional tourist 4WD, so ride assertively and keep your eyes forward on the descents.

Ride between April and October when the dry season keeps roads passable; anyone prone to altitude sickness or without off-road riding experience should reconsider this one seriously.
