Dropping out of the altiplano and into the Yungas east of La Paz, the Coroico Valley delivers one of South America's most dramatic elevation changes within a single morning's drive. The old North Yungas Road — long notorious, now rebranded for cyclists and birders alike — threads through cloud forest, bamboo thickets, and humid montane scrub as you descend from around 4,600 metres to under 1,200 metres.

That compression of habitat zones is the whole point: you're effectively birding several ecosystems before lunch.

The forest itself is dense and dripping, particularly between 1,800 and 2,400 metres where epiphytes smother every branch. This is where you'll be hunting for the Bolivian Recurvebill, which works through bamboo tangles with maddening persistence. The Rufous-faced Antpitta is skulking but vocal — pre-dawn is your best window, when the mist sits low and the birds are most active.

Black-throated Trogons are comparatively obliging and often perch long enough for a decent view, while the Scaled Fruiteater rewards patience in the mid-storey. Realistic expectations matter: the antpitta can take multiple visits, but the trogon is fairly reliable with a competent guide.

Access is straightforward from La Paz, roughly 90 minutes to Unduavi and the upper road sections. Local guides operate out of Coroico town, and several experienced naturalist guides from La Paz cover the route regularly — booking in advance is sensible for the specialist species. Accommodation in Coroico ranges from simple guesthouses to comfortable eco-lodges with gardens that attract their own good birds at dusk.

Go between May and October during the dry season; pack rubber boots regardless, bring a scope for open-slope species, and load up on repellent once you drop below 2,000 metres.
