ZOO Planckendael

ZOO Planckendael sits on 42 green hectares along the Leuvensesteenweg, about ten minutes outside central Mechelen by bus or bike. It feels spacious compared to most European city zoos — broad grassy paths, mature trees throwing decent shade, and enough room that even on a busy Saturday in July you rarely feel sardined.

The overall atmosphere is unhurried and family-focused, with wide tarmac paths that handle pushchairs and wheelchairs without drama.

The white rhino habitat is the standout exhibit: a generous, open-plan enclosure where the animals are often visible at close quarters grazing or wallowing, depending on the season. The Asian elephant yard is similarly well-considered, with varied terrain and visible enrichment activity most mornings. Cheetahs occupy a long-run enclosure that actually allows you to watch them move at pace, which is rarer than it should be.

The safari walk circuit ties the larger mammal zones together and gives the park a loose narrative arc rather than the aimless grid you get at older-style zoos.

Planckendael is operated by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and functions as a genuine satellite to Antwerp Zoo, with active breeding programmes for elephants, rhinos, and several primate species under EAZA coordination. Conservation credentials here are solid rather than decorative.

Allow a full day, especially with children. The park can feel thin on shade in the open savanna sections during summer afternoons, so plan the rhino and elephant viewing for morning when animals are most active and the heat is manageable.
