Few places on earth carry the kind of quiet, unsettling weight that Easter Island does. Known locally as Rapa Nui, this remote volcanic speck sits roughly 3,700 kilometres off the Chilean coast, and the sheer effort of getting there — a five-hour flight from Santiago — only adds to the sense of arriving somewhere genuinely apart from the world.

The landscape is stark and windswept, all rolling grassland, black lava coastline, and enormous sky, and scattered across it are the moai: nearly a thousand monolithic stone figures whose origins and purpose still spark genuine debate.

The most dramatic concentration of statues stands at Ahu Tongariki on the island's eastern coast — fifteen moai lined up against the Pacific in a scene that genuinely stops you mid-stride. Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where the figures were carved, is equally compelling; dozens of half-finished moai still jut from the hillside, frozen mid-creation. Anakena Beach offers a softer counterpoint, with white sand, two restored ahu, and swimmable water.

Most sites fall within Rapa Nui National Park, which charges a park fee (currently around USD 80 for foreigners) collected at the airport on arrival — keep your passport handy.

Getting around requires planning. You can rent a car, scooter, or bicycle in Hanga Roa, the island's only town, which is also where you'll find all accommodation and restaurants. Roads are mostly paved but narrow. Sunrise at Tongariki is genuinely worth an early start, and sunset from Tahai, just outside town, is equally good.

The island sees far fewer tourists than its fame suggests, but July and August bring higher prices and the lively Tapati festival crowds.

Visit between March and May for mild weather, lower prices, and the most comfortable conditions for walking the sites.
