The Nile between Luxor and Aswan is unlike any cruising ground I've ever worked. There's no sea swell, no tidal range to worry about, no salt crust on the winches — just a broad, slow river threading between sandstone cliffs, sugar cane fields, and temples that have been watching the water for three thousand years.

The wind regime here is one of the great gifts of Nile navigation: a reliable northerly, the *rih al-bahri*, pushes steadily upstream from Luxor toward Aswan for most of the season, meaning a traditional dahabiya can sail south under canvas and drift back north with the current. It's elegant, almost mechanical in its logic.

A dahabiya — the two-masted lateen-rigged houseboat favoured by Victorian travellers — is the vessel worth booking. Bareboat isn't really the model here; you charter the whole boat with its captain, cook, and crew, typically for five to ten days. Provisioning is handled for you, though you'll want to come ashore at Edfu or Kom Ombo for the markets.

Day sailing is the norm, mooring each evening against a mud bank or at a small town quay, which lets you explore Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, or Edfu Temple without rushing. Evenings on deck are the quiet highlight — the crew brews tea, the stars appear with almost no light pollution, and the river turns a flat copper colour before dark.

Paperwork is manageable: Egyptian visas on arrival or e-visa in advance, and your charter company handles all river permits. Bring modest clothing for temple visits; the crew will appreciate it.

October through February suits most people — cooler days, strong northerlies, and manageable crowds at the major sites.
