El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest system, and that distinction alone tells you something about how different this place feels. Located about an hour's drive east of San Juan along Route 191 into the Sierra de Luquillo mountains, it's a world of layered green — dense canopy overhead, ferns cascading down hillsides, and the constant sound of moving water.

On clear days, the views from El Yunque Peak or the Yokahu Tower stretch all the way to the coast, and the air smells genuinely clean in a way that city travellers often forget exists.

The forest covers around 28,000 acres and receives roughly 240 inches of rain per year in some areas, so prepare accordingly. Light showers can roll in without much warning even on sunny mornings. Wear quick-dry clothing, bring a waterproof layer, and use shoes with grip — some trails get genuinely slippery.

La Mina Trail to La Mina Falls is the most popular route and gets crowded by mid-morning, especially on weekends and public holidays. Starting early, before nine, makes a noticeable difference.

Entry to the forest itself is free, though the El Portal Visitor Centre charges a small fee and is worth the stop for trail maps and updated conditions. Driving is really the most practical way in; car hire from San Juan is straightforward, though parking at the main trailheads fills quickly. There's no reliable public transport into the forest interior.

Puerto Rico's dry season runs roughly from December through April, which gives you the best chance of clear skies — though in a rainforest, some mist is always part of the experience, not something to avoid.
