Riding EuroVelo 9 from Gdańsk south to Pula is one of those long-haul journeys that genuinely changes shape every few days, and that variety is exactly what keeps you turning the pedals. Most riders budget five to seven weeks, though strong cyclists have pushed through in four.

The opening stretch across Poland's flat river plains is deceptively tiring — long, exposed days where the wind either gifts you forty-kilometre hours or grinds you to a crawl. The surface here alternates between decent asphalt and rougher packed gravel, so wider tyres (38mm or above) will save your wrists.

By the time you're threading through the Czech and Slovak lowlands the route softens into a pleasant rhythm of small towns, riverside paths, and the occasional nerve-shredding shared-road section where the EV9 signage quietly abandons you. Vienna arrives like a reward — genuinely well-signed cycle infrastructure, superb bike-hire availability, and a logical rest day if your knees are complaining.

From there the Mur and Drava river valleys carry you south through Austria and Slovenia with more climbing than the first half suggests: expect a cumulative elevation gain somewhere north of 12,000 metres before you reach the Adriatic.

Croatia's Istrian peninsula is where the route earns its keep scenically. The hills are short but punchy, the stone villages are beautiful, and the roads are quiet enough to feel safe. Sleeping options run the full range from wild camping to boutique agritourism, and trains accept boxed bikes at most major waypoints if a section defeats you.

Pack a detailed offline map — route markings are inconsistent across all six countries — and go between May and early September to avoid both spring mud and August coastal heat.
