Faunia sits in the Vicálvaro district on Madrid's eastern edge, about twenty minutes by metro from the city centre on Line 2 to Las Rivas. At 14 hectares it is compact enough to cover in half a day, though younger children will easily stretch it to a full one. The park opened in 2001 with an explicit focus on recreating distinct ecosystems rather than presenting animals in traditional enclosure rows, and that ambition still shapes the experience. You move between a convincing polar zone, a humid Amazon pavilion, an open savannah area and a forest ecosystem, each with its own temperature, vegetation and soundscape. The polar section is the crowd-puller, housing king penguins and gentoo penguins in a chilled indoor space that steams noticeably when you walk in from the Madrid heat. The Amazon pavilion is genuinely immersive — free-flying birds move around you, the humidity is real and humidity-adapted reptiles and primates occupy well-planted enclosures. The savannah zone is more exposed and can feel harsh by midday in July or August. Faunia has participated in European breeding programmes for several species, and its interpretation boards are reasonably educational, though the park leans more toward visitor experience than deep conservation communication. Some of the older animal holding areas backstage are visible and less polished than the headline zones. Annual footfall of around 300,000 means weekday mornings are genuinely quiet, particularly outside school holidays. Ticket prices run roughly 25–30 euros for adults. The paths are flat and pushchair-friendly throughout. Arrive at opening time on a weekday if you want the penguin zone without queuing, and bring a light layer even in summer for the polar and Amazon pavilions.
