Few places in the Netherlands stop you in your tracks quite like De Hoge Veluwe. Spread across more than 5,500 hectares of Gelderland, this is one of the largest national parks in the country, and it manages to feel genuinely wild despite being a comfortable drive from Arnhem or Apeldoorn.

The landscape shifts in ways you simply don't expect from the Dutch lowlands — open heathland bleeds into dense pine forest, and then suddenly you're standing on the Stuifzand, an interior drift plain of pale shifting sand dunes that looks more like a fragment of the Sahara than central Europe.

Red deer, wild boar, and mouflon roam freely here, and if you walk quietly along the unmarked heathland paths in the early morning or at dusk, sightings are genuinely likely.

What sets De Hoge Veluwe apart is the combination of raw nature and serious culture. Somewhere in the middle of all that forest sits the Kröller-Müller Museum, housing one of the finest Van Gogh collections in the world alongside a remarkable sculpture garden. It's a strange and wonderful contrast that works completely.

Getting around is straightforward thanks to the park's fleet of free white bicycles, available at the three entrance gates — Hoenderloo, Otterlo, and Schaarsbergen. You bring nothing; you just take a bike and go. The park charges a single entry fee (around €11 for adults at the time of writing) that covers both the park and museum access.

Spring and autumn offer the best conditions — heather blooms purple across the heath in August and September, and autumn mist through the pines is memorable. Bring layers and waterproof shoes regardless of the forecast.
