Intervales sits in the Serra de Paranapiacaba, roughly 280 kilometres from São Paulo city, and the drive in already tells you something about the forest's quality — the Atlantic Forest closes in thickly on either side of the unsealed road, and by the time you reach the research station you're surrounded by one of the largest and best-preserved remnants of this globally threatened biome. The birding here is genuinely serious.

Trails vary from flat riverside paths to steep, root-tangled climbs through dense understorey, so expect mud, uneven footing, and humidity that has your binoculars fogging before breakfast.

The station itself offers basic but comfortable accommodation, which puts you on site for the hours that matter most. Dawn is extraordinary — start walking before first light and you'll have Robust Woodpecker hammering somewhere overhead within the first hour on a good day. Black-fronted Piping Guan moves through the mid-canopy in small groups and is reliably seen near the main forest trails, though it rewards patience rather than rushing.

Spot-billed Toucanet tends to favour the forest edge and secondary growth patches, while Mantled Hawk occasionally soars above ridge clearings. Night excursions with a local guide open up a different world entirely, with Tawny-browed Owl and Long-trained Nightjar both possible.

Local guides are available through the station and are worth every real — the forest is complex, and specialist knowledge cuts through hours of staring at the canopy. Independent access by car is feasible, but book accommodation well ahead, especially during Brazilian school holidays when the research station fills quickly.

Go between April and October, bring rubber boots without question, and pack insect repellent for the evening walks.
