Kirindy sits about 60 kilometres northeast of Morondava on a rough laterite track that takes the better part of two hours by 4WD. The forest itself is unlike anything else on Madagascar — western dry deciduous woodland where the canopy thins dramatically in the dry season and the undergrowth opens up into long, shaded corridors of baobabs and spiny scrub.

It is quiet here, genuinely quiet, and on most mornings you will share the trails with almost no one.

Birding starts at first light when the forest comes alive quickly. Giant Coua and Coquerel's Coua are both reasonably reliable along the main loop trails, moving through leaf litter and low scrub with a deliberate, almost unhurried quality. White-breasted Mesite requires more patience — you are working through dense understorey and your guide's ears matter more than your eyes.

Madagascar Nightjar is straightforward at dusk near the camp clearing, often sitting on the bare ground track itself. The site-based guides, mostly employed through the reserve system, are genuinely excellent and worth every ariary; do not attempt the forest alone.

Accommodation is simple, tented or wooden bungalow style within the reserve boundary, and food is basic but adequate. The wet season, roughly November through March, brings the highest bird activity and breeding behaviour, though the track can become impassable after heavy rain. Dry season visits are easier logistically but noticeably quieter for birds. Evening spotlighting walks add Fossa encounters and sleeping chameleons, which makes for a very full day overall.

Go between November and February for the best birding, bring rubber boots for the wet-season mud, strong repellent for sand flies, and a torch with spare batteries for the night walks.
