Lake Champlain sits in a long, narrow trough between the Adirondacks to the west and the Green Mountains to the east, and that geography shapes everything about sailing here. The lake runs roughly 180 kilometres north to south, which means you get reliable channelled winds — predominantly from the south-southwest in summer — that funnel along the valley and give you a decent beat or broad reach depending on your direction of travel. Afternoon thermals can build quickly to 20 knots, so watch the sky over the peaks; mornings are often glassy and forgiving, making day-sailing in short hops the natural rhythm. The main charter base is Burlington, Vermont, where bareboat operators keep a modest but serviceable fleet. Provisioning is easy here before you cast off. From Burlington you can work northward toward the Richelieu River, stopping at sheltered anchorages off North Hero and South Hero islands — the lake's archipelago section is genuinely lovely and offers good holding in 3–5 metres. Southward, Vergennes and Whitehall reward a slower pace; Whitehall sits at the southern terminus and carries real canal-era history. The Revolutionary War engagement at Valcour Island is worth anchoring off for the afternoon, the site quiet and the interpretive markers visible from the dinghy. Shoreside culture is unpretentious — farm stands, craft breweries, small maritime museums. Customs is relevant only if you cross into Quebec, where a phone check-in at the border is required. No ocean swell means the lake is accessible for nervous sailors and families, though sudden squalls off the mountains demand respect. Experienced bluewater sailors may find it tame; June through August suits beginners, while September brings cooler, steadier air and far fewer powerboat wakes.
