The Great Blue Hole sits about 70 kilometres offshore from Belize City, and getting here takes commitment — a two-hour boat transfer or a liveaboard departure from Belize City or Caye Caulker. Most divers make the journey on a day boat with operators like Amigos Del Mar or Hugh Parkey's, though a liveaboard gives you proper time to explore the full atoll rather than rushing a single iconic dive.
The Blue Hole itself drops to around 125 metres, and the reason serious divers make the crossing isn't the coral — there's actually very little living reef inside the hole. What you're descending for is the cathedral of stalactites hanging at 40 metres depth, remnants of a limestone cave system that flooded when sea levels rose thousands of years ago. Visibility typically runs 30 metres or better.
You'll see Caribbean reef sharks cruising mid-water, and bull sharks appear reliably between November and March, particularly along the outer wall. The dive is essentially a controlled descent, a slow stalk along the stalactite shelf, and a return ascent — narcosis is a real consideration at depth.
The surrounding Lighthouse Reef Atoll is honestly the underappreciated part. Half Moon Caye Wall offers genuine coral coverage with healthy sea fans, spotted eagle rays, and loggerhead turtles. Reef condition here is noticeably better than the more trafficked atolls closer to the mainland. Anchor damage has been an ongoing concern, though mooring buoys are now standard at most sites.
Snorkellers won't get much from the Blue Hole itself, but the atoll's shallower sites offer decent fish life and reasonable coral in 3–8 metres.
Advanced certification is required for the Blue Hole dive; plan travel between October and June for calmest crossing conditions.
