Luang Prabang is the kind of place that gets under your skin slowly. A small UNESCO-listed town at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers in northern Laos, it has a rhythm completely its own — saffron-robed monks collecting alms at dawn, French colonial shophouses turned into elegant little cafés, and golden temples on every other corner.

Climb Mount Phousi at sunset for the classic panorama over the rivers and surrounding mountains. The Kuang Si waterfalls, about 30 minutes outside town, are easily a half-day trip in themselves — a series of milky turquoise pools cascading through the jungle, perfect for swimming. Visit the morning market before 8am for the most authentic glimpse of local life.

The town is small enough to walk or bicycle around easily. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to genuinely beautiful boutique hotels in restored colonial buildings. Pace yourself — Luang Prabang isn't a place you tick off in a day. Most travellers who plan two nights end up staying four. There's a wifi blackout in most temples and many cafés, which is part of the appeal.
