Few places in the world carry the weight that Machu Picchu does the moment it comes into view. Perched at roughly 2,430 metres above sea level in the Andean cloud forest, the fifteenth-century Inca citadel emerges from morning mist with a quiet drama that photographs simply cannot prepare you for.

The stonework is extraordinary — massive granite blocks fitted together without mortar, terraces cascading down steep slopes, and temples aligned with astronomical precision. It feels less like a ruin and more like a place time briefly forgot.

Getting here takes some planning. Most travellers approach via Aguas Calientes, the small town at the base of the mountain, reached either by train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, or by a combination of bus and hiking along the Inca Trail (permits for the trail sell out months in advance). From Aguas Calientes, shuttle buses wind up the switchback road to the main entrance.

Entry is ticketed and capped — slots sell out weeks ahead, particularly for July and August, so book through the official government portal well before you travel.

Inside the sanctuary, circuits are one-directional and managed by time slot. Arriving at opening (around 6am) gives you roughly an hour before larger groups arrive, and the low cloud often lifts to reveal the surrounding peaks in spectacular fashion. If you want to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for elevated views across the site, those require separate tickets purchased at the same time as your main entry.

Altitude affects people differently — spend at least two nights in Cusco acclimatising beforehand. Bring layers, waterproofs, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear; the stone paths get slippery when wet, and weather can shift dramatically within minutes.
