The Maldives asks you to rethink what sailing means. You are not threading between headlands or chasing a distant harbour light — you are crawling across a vast, low-lying archipelago where the highest point is barely two metres above the sea and the water runs every shade between turquoise and deep indigo.

The 26 atolls string themselves across roughly 900 kilometres of the Indian Ocean, and on a good day the visibility underwater rivals anything you will find on a passage.

The northeast monsoon from December through April delivers the cruising season proper. Winds hold in the 10–20 knot range, seas stay reasonably settled, and the skies cooperate. You will island-hop at a leisurely pace — these are short day sails, rarely more than 20–30 nautical miles between atolls, so night passages are neither necessary nor particularly advisable given the coral heads.

North Malé and South Malé atolls are where most charter operations base themselves; Hulhumalé is your practical logistics hub for fuel, gas, and provisioning, though stock up properly before heading south towards Ari Atoll, where resupply thins out considerably.

Bureaucracy deserves attention. Foreign yachts require a cruising permit, and you must clear in through Malé. Some anchorages near resort islands carry restrictions, so confirm permissions in advance rather than arriving and assuming. The culture is conservative and Islamic — dress modestly ashore on inhabited islands, and keep noise and alcohol consumption discreet outside of designated resort zones.

Bareboat chartering is possible but limited; most visiting sailors opt for a skippered or crewed liveaboard arrangement, which suits the permit complexity and local knowledge requirements.

December to March is ideal; anyone expecting budget provisioning or laid-back bureaucracy should recalibrate expectations well before departure.
