Maldives Atolls

The Maldives operates on a scale that takes some adjustment. These aren't tight little coral gardens you can swim across in ten minutes — the atolls stretch across hundreds of kilometres of Indian Ocean, and the diving reflects that openness. Visibility regularly hits 20–30 metres, sometimes more, and the water moves. Channels between atolls funnel serious current, which is exactly what draws the pelagics in.

Whale sharks cruise the surface near Ari Atoll year-round, mantas stack up at cleaning stations around South Malé and Hanifaru Bay, and if you position yourself correctly in a channel at dusk, tuna schools push through in numbers that feel almost prehistoric.

Depth ranges vary widely depending on where you're diving. Thilas — submerged pinnacles — typically top out at 5–15 metres and drop to 30 metres or beyond, with overhangs hosting grey reef sharks and Napoleon wrasse. The reef condition is genuinely mixed. Bleaching events in 1998, 2016, and again recently have hit some outer reefs hard, and you'll see ghost coral in places.

That said, fish biomass remains impressive, and recovery is visible on many protected sites.

Logistics here split into two distinct experiences. Day boats from resort islands work perfectly for sites within 30–60 minutes, and almost every resort runs a dive centre. For the full picture — remote atolls, night dives, hammerheads at Rasdhoo — a liveaboard is worth the cost. Operators range from budget to polished luxury, and booking fills up fast in peak season.

Best months are November to April for the northeast monsoon and calmer seas; open-water certification covers most sites, but advanced is strongly recommended if you want the channel dives.
