Manado Tua sits just offshore from the Bunaken Marine Park, its steep volcanic cone rising from the Celebes Sea in a way that makes every surface interval feel a little cinematic. The diving here runs from shallow reef tops at 3–5 metres down to dramatic wall sections dropping past 40 metres, though most of the interesting work happens between 10 and 25 metres where the wall undercuts and ledges collect an extraordinary amount of life. Visibility is generally excellent, sitting around 20–30 metres on calm days, though currents can run hard along the northern and eastern exposures — nothing unmanageable for an intermediate diver, but worth briefing carefully. The reef itself is in reasonable condition compared to many Indonesian sites, though you will notice bleaching on the shallower sections, particularly after warm-water events in recent years. The walls hold up better, and the diversity of hard and soft coral below 15 metres is genuinely impressive. What draws a lot of photographers here is the macro life — nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, and decorator crabs tucked into the sponges — alongside larger residents like Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish moving in schools along the reef crest, and reliably good encounters with sea turtles. Logistics are straightforward. The vast majority of divers base themselves in Manado or along the Bunaken area and take day boats across; the crossing takes 20–40 minutes depending on your operator. Liveaboards covering North Sulawesi typically include Manado Tua as part of a wider circuit. Operators of all sizes are well established here, with decent equipment rental widely available. Best visited between May and October when seas are calmer and visibility peaks; open-water certification is sufficient for most sites, though a drift-diving course is worth considering before your trip.
